All you need is:
- Elastic ribbon (the stuff we're using is 5/8 inch foldover elastic)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape/ruler
Now the length of your elastic ribbon is completely up to you. For me, 10 inches (around 26cm) is the perfect length to cut, whereas Camille who has much thicker & longer hair than me prefers hers to be around 12 inches (about 30cm) long.
Cut your elastic, fold it in half and knot the ends... and you're done! I've heard of some people melting the edges over a flame to prevent fraying, but honestly I don't think you need to. Although that's completely up to you!
When it comes to finding cute elastic, I recommend checking out Etsy and Ebay. If you prefer to do your shopping in store, check out emporiums and craft stores like Spotlight. You'll be amazed at what you can find.
Not only will your new customised hair ties make it impossible for people to get away with stealing them (I'm looking at you Camille), but they'd also make a really simple gift. I'm planning on popping these in every Christmas card we give this year - maybe I should look for some Christmas themed elastic?
Let us know in the comments below what the last DIY project you did was, and be sure to let us know if you make your own hair ties!

I've made my own hairties before, I'm wearing one today!
ReplyDeleteThey're so good!! I love my pacman ones hahahaha I'm such a nerd. Where did you find your elastic?? oxoxo
ReplyDeleteI got it on trademe!
ReplyDeleteOoooh this is so cute! I love the owl ones! ... and the bee ones. Where did you get your elastics from? SO CUTE! >_<
ReplyDeleteI find that these hairties widen very easily (the ones I buy anyway... maybe just Warehouse ones o_O) so I just use them as pretty decorations on my wrist~
Thank you!! I found it on Etsy - they have so many cute designs on there! I WANT THEM ALL hahaha <3
ReplyDeleteYes, they definitely do widen over time. I've found that some of these have more stretch than others, so it kinda depends on what elastic you use! Good thing is you can always re-tie them so they're shorter (and tighter) if you need to - as long as they still have some stretch in them! :) oxoxo
I like this idea ladies!
ReplyDeleteHair ties in NZ are really expensive. In the UK we could get like 50 for a pound which is $2. At that price they can afford to snap every now and then :P
Thanks Sam! :)
ReplyDeleteEverything in NZ is really expensive I reckon, it's crazy! oxoxo
It's difficult because you're a small country with not a lot of buying power (compared to UK, USA, Russia etc) but then you're so close to China that it should cancel that out! Makes me mad and sad at the same time.
ReplyDeleteNevermind, we'll just make our own hair ties in the mean time :P
Yes so true!! Same :(
ReplyDeleteYES. WILL BE MAKING ALL THE STUFFS oxoxo
I love the pacman GIF!!
